Support for Ashbourne traders

Innovative business support is being offered to established Ashbourne traders and would-be entrepreneurs.

Supporting Ashbourne Town Team’s plans for the regeneration of the town centre, the initiative is a direct response to a meeting with Derbyshire Dales District Council Leader Councillor Garry Purdy at the end of last year.

Workshops developed by the District Council and East Midlands Chamber of Commerce will take place at Ashbourne Town Hall on 5 March – designed to both help start-up enterprises and existing traders.

Ashbourne Town Team is also involved and individual traders who voiced concerns to Councillor Purdy at the autumn meeting are being urged to attend. Said Councillor Purdy: “Our town centres are currently facing unprecedented challenges and I was keen to meet tradespeople in Ashbourne to hear, at first hand, their concerns. As a result, in recent weeks, we have been working with East Midlands Chamber on a workshop that will help inspiring entrepreneurs get started in business and provide existing retailers with the opportunity to brush up their display, digital marketing and merchandising skills.”

The morning session on 5 March – which will be promoted to aspiring entrepreneurs, features a workshop introducing attendees to self employment.

In the afternoon the focus will be on established retailers with the first session on digital marketing for the high street, including why mobile-friendly websites are so important to local businesses.

There will also be a session in the afternoon on merchandising and making the most of shop layouts, together with top tips.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions will be delivered by experienced trainers organised by the Chamber.  The morning session is also being promoted to students at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School.

For those interested in starting a business the morning session will lay out all the must-dos, including legal structures, market research and customer identification.

Anne Wright, who leads the Ashbourne Town Team, said: “We are delighted with this very positive initiative to help support our programme to regenerate Ashbourne. We hope it is the first of many joint projects with Derbyshire Dales District Council to direct new investment and enterprise into Ashbourne.”
