Bakewell Friends Meeting House

Bakewell Quakers are looking for help with managing their premises.

They have an attractive and well maintained Meeting House in Chapel Row. It is used by Quakers as a place of worship, and also by many local organisations as a comfortable and affordable meeting space. Information about the facilities available at the Meeting House is at https://www.bakewellquakers.org/contact-us/booking-a-room/

Quakers are reviewing the way in which the Meeting House is managed. Current arrangements involve volunteer effort by Quakers, supported by a part-time caretaker and a cleaner.

Quakers are seeking a new arrangement which maintains the good management of the building, increases its use by the local community, and frees scarce Quaker time for spiritual and social concerns.

The range of tasks where Quakers are seeking assistance include:

Management

  • Promote the use of the Meeting House by suitable hirers
  • Manage bookings including the bookings calendar and payments by hirers
  • Work collaboratively with the cleaner
  • Engage contractors to carry out specialist jobs, such as electrical repairs

Practical

  • Look after the building including caretaking and minor maintenance
  • Procure supplies such as cleaning materials
  • Keep the garden and grounds tidy.

Quakers will continue to set policy for maintaining the Meeting House and managing its use, and take responsibility for finance.

Hirers are generally self-servicing, arranging their own access to the building and putting out and putting away furniture. Caretaking currently involves keeping a regular eye on the building and grounds, setting the heating, showing new hirers round, and admitting tradespeople as required.

Quakers would like to explore partnership with an individual or an organisation willing to supply all the services described in the ‘range of tasks’ section above. We are looking for part-time help. The present caretaker role would be subsumed within the new arrangements. To discuss what would be involved, including the likely budget, please contact Roger Clarke, Stewardship Committee convenor, at clarkerogerm@gmail.com or 07943 845745.
